Zoe Saldaña Addresses Controversy Surrounding ‘Emilia Pérez’

The film "Emilia Pérez," a highly anticipated production heading into awards season, has faced significant criticism for its portrayal of Mexican cartels and its approach to trans representation. Directed by Jacques Audiard, the movie has sparked controversy due to the director's previous remarks about the Spanish language, which were deemed offensive by some. Despite these challenges, the film triumphed at the 2025 Oscars, securing two Academy Awards, including best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña and best original song for "El Mal."

Zoe Saldaña's response to the backlash surrounding "Emilia Pérez" has elicited mixed reactions on social media. Some viewers described her comments as dismissive and disrespectful, particularly in light of a Mexican reporter's question about the film's depiction of Mexico. The reporter remarked that the portrayal was "really hurtful for us Mexicans," prompting Saldaña to issue an apology.

"First of all, I'm very, very sorry that you and so many Mexicans felt offended. That was never our intention. We spoke and came from a place of love, and I will stand by that." – Zoe Saldaña

Saldaña emphasized that the heart of "Emilia Pérez" was not centered on Mexico but rather on the story of four women. She suggested that the film's setting could have been interchangeable with locations such as Detroit, Israel, Russia, Gaza, or the Dominican Republic.

"For me, the heart of this movie was not Mexico. We weren't making a film about a country. We were making a film about four women." – Zoe Saldaña

Despite this explanation, LGBTQ critics have voiced concerns over the film's representation of trans characters. Additionally, Karla Sofía Gascón, the film's star, has come under scrutiny for past offensive social media posts.

Saldaña expressed her willingness to engage in dialogue with those who felt offended by the film. She reiterated her openness to constructive conversations with Mexicans about how "Emilia Pérez" could have been improved.

"So I will stand by that, but I'm also always open to sit down with all of my Mexican brothers and sisters and with love and respect having a great conversation on how 'Emilia' could have been done better. I have no problem. I welcome it." – Zoe Saldaña
