In Florida, 23-year-old Devin Davis has become the primary provider and caretaker of his five younger siblings. This heavy responsibility has been placed on him following the untimely death of his two parents back in February. Eldest of five, Devin is willing to go to any lengths to prevent his family from falling apart. He has the profound burden of losing his father, James Andrew Davis, and mother, Jennifer Davis, within the same week.
The heartbreak that fueled this tragedy started when 42-year-old James Andrew Davis died suddenly while on a work trip to Florida. On February 14, Devin and James’ manager found James in his hotel room unresponsive. Devin did everything he could to give CPR as soon as possible. Unfortunately, despite his actions and the rapid response of first responders, James died at the scene.
“Even though I know this is happening, it still just don’t feel real. My father was one of my best friends. We did everything together. We fished together, worked together.” – Devin Davis
Only one week later, on February 22, the family received an even more devastating blow. Read their story here. Jennifer Davis passed away on March 5 from injuries received after being struck by a car on February 21. Though she was initially in critical condition after the crash, she unfortunately passed away.
In the wake of these tragedies, Devin has assumed temporary custody of his four younger brothers: Jasin, Jakeb, Tobias, and Preston. He’s determined to keep on with his desire to continue to raise them and maintain their family structure. Devin is due back in court in May, hoping to get full custody.
“I go to court again in May to get full custody of [my brothers]. I’m not really sure if I would have to go through the adopting route or not … If I have to, absolutely.” – Devin Davis
Devin’s commitment to his siblings is a testament to the family values and hard work his late father taught his children.
“My dad was one of the hardest working men I’ve ever met in my life outside of his father,” he shared. “He would do anything for us boys or anybody outside of the community.”
Despite the overwhelming circumstances, Devin remains focused on providing stability for his brothers. He knows the road is long and hard, but he is determined to fight through it for his wife and two daughters.
“I don’t even know how to use words to describe it, like, it’s just unreal,” he expressed.
