Young Golfer Charlie Woods Shines in Junior PGA Championships

Charlie Axel Woods was born on February 8, 2009. On the course, he’s rapidly established himself as one of the brightest young talents in golf. Charlie, the son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, is on a torrid chase of his father’s legacy. He is putting on display his phenomenal talents across various competitive stages. Through a combination of natural ability and work ethic, he is determined to make his own name in the sport.

As Tiger has noted often over the last couple years, it’s been pretty amazing to see Charlie’s capacity to learn by watch and shadow. In 2021 he explained that “Charlie just observes me doing it, and then he sort of does it.” This hands-off approach gives Charlie the freedom to learn the game his way without the constraints of a coach’s structure and direction. Tiger emphasizes the significance of guiding his son while protecting him from the intense scrutiny that accompanies their family name.

On February 22, Charlie took to the stage as an individual competitor for the first time. He was competing in a pre-qualifier for The Cognizant Classic, one stop on the PGA Tour. This was a great accomplishment on his young career’s resume. Just last month, Charlie and Tiger faced this challenge jointly at the PNC Championship. There, they put their skills on display at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida. At this joint event, Tiger hit a big milestone. His first-ever hole-in-one came on the fourth hole in that Masters’ second round — and Charlie was there to take in the historic moment.

By July 2025, Charlie was on top of the world after winning the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. He exhibited his burgeoning talent at Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas. Even after going through his tournament challenges, he was able to showcase his resilience and drive. These characteristics are key for any athlete. During the stretch, his play soared, punctuated by a sizzling round of 66 at the Junior PGA Championships on July 30. He made an epic nine birdies during that round and jumped from 43rd all the way up to a tie for 7th place.

>Tiger Woods has taken an active role in fostering Charlie’s story. When Charlie had to play a tournament in Florida last September, Fred was on his bag as Charlie’s caddie, which gives you an idea of their tight relationship. Tiger has often spoken about the dual role he plays as a father: “Being a parent, you always want to be the protector and guider of them and teach them skills that they will need in life when you’re not around.” He deeply desires to see Charlie become the best version of himself. Along the way, he hopes to teach his mentee essential life skills that transcend the golf course.

In addition to revealing their playfulness with one another, Charlie has opened up about the dynamic of their relationship as competitors. We live in our own insular bubble, as he reflected on some recent stories about infrastructure and environmental policy, he said. We go shot by shot, one swing by one swing, meditative and mindful amidst the chaos of competitive dance.

As they find their way together through the new dynamics of their golf partnership, Tiger reflects on being thankful for all the things they’ve shared. This is the adventure of a lifetime for us! he shouted. His enthusiasm at being able to participate in all of these activities with his son came through.
