Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu electrified audiences at Wimbledon 2025. Both of them achieved stunning success in their games. Alcaraz, the defending champion, took care of Estonia’s Oliver Tarvet in Depok, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4. At the same time, Raducanu fought off a determined challenge from Marketa Vondrousova to extend her own perfect run through the tournament. Having long-term dreams of winning the French Open and Wimbledon double for a second year in a row, Alcaraz’s display was made even greater by that.
It wasn’t an easy start to the day as a light morning rain forced a two hour delay for play. For over an hour competitors waited anxiously before finally stepping onto the uncovered courts. And once play resumed, the players settled in despite the weather, showing their athleticism and intense will to compete.
Alcaraz’s Commanding Display
Third seed Carlos Alcaraz came into the second round bout against Estonia’s Oliver Tarvet expecting a lot. That proved important as the young Spaniard saved three break points in a nail biting first service game. His performance really marked the tempo of a combative match with controlled aggression. Over the course of the fight he showed a great control of pace, changing up the speed to keep Tarvet constantly pressured.
Looking back on his opponent’s play, Alcaraz had glowing things to say about Tarvet’s game.
“First of all, I have to give a big congratulations to Oliver. It’s his second match on the tour. I just loved his game to be honest, the level he played.” – Carlos Alcaraz
It was Alcaraz’s poise under pressure and readiness to take his chances that carried him through quite comfortably in the end, as it happened, to a straight-sets win. He refuses to rest on his laurels, insisting on making 2012 as good as last year.
Raducanu’s Resurgence
Emma Raducanu’s match against Marketa Vondrousova highlighted her return to form as she executed powerful and carefree shots reminiscent of her US Open triumph in 2021. After falling behind, 2-4, Raducanu was up a break at 4-2 on Vondrousova, trading punches and revealing her toughness and willingness to adjust plans on the fly.
Upon winning her Grand Slam, Raducanu discussed the pressure she felt during her run. She herself was surprised at least by some of the points she was able to prevail on.
“Today I played really, really well. There were some points that I have no idea how I turned around.” – Emma Raducanu
As she further asserted control over the match, Raducanu’s confidence blossomed, proving that she has the ability to make an even deeper run into the tournament.
Upsets and Surprising Outcomes
Wimbledon 2025 hasn’t exactly been free of controversy. In women’s news, American 12th seed Frances Tiafoe was upset by Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie. Norrie emerged triumphant by a scoreline of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5. Katie Boulter had difficulty versus Solana Sierra, ranked 101st, going down after serving up 14 double faults during the encounter.
Aryna Sabalenka recently complained about all the upsets happening in the men’s and women’s draws this year.
“Honestly, it is sad to see so many upsets in the tournament in both draws, women’s and men’s.” – Aryna Sabalenka
These global challenges did nothing to deter Sabalenka. She then defeated Marie Bouzkova in the final 7-6, 6-4 to take the title. Elsewhere, Madison Keys cruised past Olga Danilovic 6-4, 6-2 and Naomi Osaka rolled over Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-2. Joao Fonseca too scored his own upset on the day besting Jenson Brooksby.
