“Wicked” Stars Shine at the 2025 Oscars: A Night to Remember

Cynthia Erivo
and Ariana Grande captivated audiences worldwide as they opened the 2025 Oscars with a mesmerizing performance medley from the “Wizard of Oz” universe. The duo, known for their roles as Elphaba and Glinda in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked,” brought their characters to life on stage. The Jon M. Chu-directed film, which is an adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, went into the awards show with an impressive ten Oscar nominations, including best picture.

Erivo, portraying Elphaba Thropp, delivered a powerful performance that resonated deeply with her personal experiences. As she shared on "The View" last November, she felt an immediate connection with the character, stating:

"That feeling of being on the outside, being a bit different, not fitting in. And so there was something about it that felt familiar, and I felt that it was important to be a part of that storytelling, because I can understand it." – Cynthia Erivo

Grande, who had long aspired to play the role of Glinda, dazzled the audience in a sparkling red gown as she began the set with a stirring rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Her entrance, emerging from a cloud of smoke against a night sky backdrop, set the tone for an unforgettable evening. Grande's passion for the role was evident as she reflected:

"I had the incredible privilege of seeing the original Broadway cast of 'Wicked' when I was 10, and I just felt an immediate bond." – Ariana Grande

Their performances were more than just musical numbers; they highlighted the depth of their characters' journey. In "Wicked," Elphaba and Glinda forge an unlikely friendship, only to face a pivotal crossroad by the end of "Part One" after meeting the Wizard of Oz.

As Grande gracefully exited the stage, Erivo took over in a voluminous white gown to deliver a soulful cover of Diana Ross' "The Wiz" from the 1978 film. Their performance not only showcased their vocal prowess but also underscored their commitment to these iconic roles. Both actresses received individual nominations, with Erivo up for best actress and Grande for best supporting actress.
