WestJet, Canada’s discount airline of choice, is making a big move. That redesign stretches across the entire fleet of acquired aircraft. This amendment will apply to all 43 aircraft acquired from failed carriers Swoop, Lynx and Sunwing. In the airline’s new economy cabin, standard economy seats will get rid of the traditional reclining function, using a jerk-free “fixed recline” structure. This new change not only brings an increase in passenger comfort, but gives the cabin more creative space utilization.
The redesign will impact WestJet’s Boeing 737-8 MAX and 737-800 aircrafts, which account for less than a third of the airline’s narrowbody fleet. The initial batch of reconfigured aircraft is expected to enter service later this month. The other 42 will be delivered by early 2018. WestJet’s new expanded and improved main economy cabin and sharply defined and refreshed Premium Cabin will create a more contemporary travel experience for guests.
WestJet has already entered the U.S. transborder market, currently serving 19 states and Hawaii, including Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Through these adjustments, the airline hopes to bring back customer confidence and be more efficient with their fleet. All standard economy seating will no longer offer a recline feature. For those boarding in Extended Comfort and Premium cabin, they’ll still have some ability to recline.
“Through our guest user testing, half indicated they preferred a fixed recline, to avoid feeling impacted by other passengers encroaching upon their space.” – WestJet representative
The airline first announced the redesign last month, casting itself as an industry leader in innovation for the airline industry. A WestJet representative stated, “We need to be willing to try new products and see how they work for Canadians.” This positive sentiment is a great testament to the airline’s commitment to pivoting and shaping services around passenger needs.
WestJet’s new seating configuration puts passenger comfort first. It removes all of the concerns that accompany standard recliner seats, creating a better travel experience,” said the company. The adjustable recline option truly enhances your flying experience. It reduces annoyances from fellow travelers who recline their seats.
As WestJet continues through its fleet renewal program, it is committed to bringing travellers more options and enhanced services. The airline’s focus on affordability continues to resonate with Canadian travelers as it evolves its offerings in a competitive market.
