Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme Features Bill Murray as an Informal God

Wes Anderson, the visionary and beloved writer-director, has created that whimsical world in his new film, “The Phoenician Scheme.” Co-written with Roman Coppola, the film showcases an ensemble cast including Bill Murray, who takes on the unconventional role of God. Murray’s portrayal is described as “an informal God,” adding a distinct flavor to the film’s exploration of themes such as personal growth and introspection.

The Phoenician Scheme” plays out in a black and white film noir-esque liminal space. It offers a vision of the afterlife that makes an effort to be grounded, immediate, and earthly. Anderson emphasized his desire for authenticity by stating, “We wanted it to all exist in front of the camera, to not use computer visual effects, to have it all be there.” Through this innovative approach, the story is able to emerge organically, providing a 360-degree visual experience for viewers.

In the movie, Benicio del Toro plays the business mogul Zsa-zsa Korda. He then appoints his daughter, Liesl, played by Mia Threapleton, as his only heir to his estate. Their story is inextricably linked with that of Korda’s teacher, Bjorn (played by Michael Cera). Together, they start a new enterprise while facing a series of assassination attempts that test their resolve and character.

Anderson remarked on the character development within the film, highlighting Zsa-zsa’s journey through visions that occur during the repeated attempts on his life. “I think some of the most important changes in Benicio’s character Zsa-z-sa are taking place during these sort of visions that he’s having as he repeatedly dies, or keeps getting assassinated,” he stated.

The film is anchored by an all-star cast. It features Academy Award-winning and nominated actors such as Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, and Scarlett Johansson. F. Murray Abraham, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Willem Dafoe are other impressive cast members. On top of them, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Ayoade, and Benedict Cumberbatch add to the heavy hitters. Academy Award nominee Rupert Friend and Tony Award winner Hope Davis round out this large cast.

Reflecting on Bill Murray’s performance, Anderson shared his thoughts about the actor’s embodiment of God. What I can tell you is that when Bill walked on set in his robes and his beard, he was so encumbered he could not walk. And yet he looked so at ease, and he sat enthroned in such a sumptuous way. It really didn’t look like he was throwing a ruse,” he said.

Audiences are looking forward to seeing the film when it releases. Anderson’s singular storytelling style and inviting premise offers a surreal yet relatable ride that will mix laughter with honest existential thought.
