Water Crisis Forces Evacuations in Northern Ontario First Nation Community

A northern Ontario First Nation community is facing a severe water crisis that has led to the evacuation of many residents, leaving only a few hundred people behind. Things really reached a boiling point when the local drinking water and sewage networks totally broke down. Filthy fresh water soon started pouring into houses, bringing raw sewage along with it. In an effort to address these acute threats to public health and safety, officials announced a state of emergency on January 4th, 2016.

More recently, residents have been complaining of nausea and other ailments. This recent increase in illnesses has sent public health officials scrambling to find the source of the infections. Wesley, a community representative, confirmed that eight people tested positive for a bacterial infection linked to the contaminated water supply. We look forward to more test results coming in any day now. Officials said they are optimistic that these findings will identify the source of the illness.

The Cree community, situated on the western shore of James Bay, depended greatly on these water systems for day-to-day life. The resultant infrastructure damage has left enormous burdens on residents. Sewage overwhelmed homes and poisoned potable water supplies. State officials were quick to understand the seriousness of the situation, pushing them to issue a state of emergency.

Public health officials are on the frontlines of addressing the crisis. Perhaps most importantly, they’re keeping a watchful eye on the health of the remaining residents. There’s no type of urgency that should ever be overstated, especially when the water coming out of public pipelines is contaminated with chemicals that are critical to public health. Residents who evacuated have been advised to stay out of the community until officials determine it is safe to return.

The information about this critical situation was initially posted on January 17, 2026, at 2:04 PM and was last updated shortly after at 3:07 PM. The community continues to experience adverse effects, and federal officials are currently cutting their teeth on the resolution process. In addition, they are taking further steps to restore safe water access long-term and protect the health of all community residents.
