Verstappen Welcomes Mekies as New Red Bull Chief, Dismisses Rumors of Exit

Max Verstappen, the reigning four-time world champion, was the first to express his excitement about Laurent Mekies taking over as Red Bull Racing’s new team principal. This transition follows Christian Horner stepping down from the position. Verstappen is convinced Mekies has what it takes to guide the team through a new chapter. In this new era, there will be renewed and deliberate push for technical and engineering rigor.

Verstappen, who is currently third in the drivers’ standings behind Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, indicated that Mekies’ leadership could enhance Red Bull’s competitive edge. The Belgian driver made clear that he’s hopeful for the long-term direction of the team, now on its way under Mekies’ stewardship.

There’s the chance you might not live to see tomorrow, and thus there’s no reason to drive. Verstappen said, reminding us that we never know what life will bring and to always live in the moment. He reiterated his commitment to Red Bull, stating, “Life is unpredictable and, in general, I am happy with where I am at.”

Even with speculation of a mega-deal to jump to Mercedes next season, Verstappen remains loyal to Red Bull. He is undeterred and steadfast in his intentions for next season. He did offer some clarification that Horner’s departure doesn’t affect his own decision on his future with the team.

“Christian Horner’s departure will have no impact on my future plans,” he asserted. “I expect to stay with Red Bull until the conclusion of my current contract in 2028.” This announcement takes the air out of the speculation bubbling up under the surface and reaffirms Verstappen’s commitment to Red Bull Racing.

Verstappen was quick to dismiss any talk of tension between his father and Horner. He reiterated that it was never a big concern among the staff. His emphasis clearly needs to change to putting in good, solid performances – particularly under Mekies’ leadership.

With the season winding down, Verstappen is intent on lifting Red Bull and Mekies. The way he’s going to do that is with some jaw-dropping on-track success. The Belgian Grand Prix, one of his home races, provides him with an opportunity to race boldly. In doing so, he can prove his unquestionable talent and fortify his rank atop the championship standings.
