The ongoing Ukrainian resistance to signing a critical resource deal with the United States has reached a stalemate, as negotiations continue in an attempt to end the war in Ukraine. The deal aims to provide the U.S. with access to Ukraine's vital minerals and resources, including the refurbishment of an aluminium mine capable of meeting all of America's annual aluminium needs. However, the draft agreement remains unaccepted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who seeks more substantial security guarantees from the U.S.
The draft deal, which a source revealed "does not foresee any American obligations while Ukraine is expected to provide everything," has sparked significant debate. Ukraine is pushing for assurances that include the return of lost territories and protection against potential Russian invasions. This demand has led to ongoing talks between the two nations, with a U.S. official noting that recent meetings involving Kellogg have been "very good meetings sealing this for the President of the United States."
The urgency of these discussions is underscored by Zelensky's criticism of former President Donald Trump, who falsely accused him of instigating the Ukraine war. Zelensky countered by accusing Trump of living in a "disinformation space." Meanwhile, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized their goal:
"Ahead of the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale aggression, I underscored Ukraine’s strong will to achieve a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace—one that will strengthen Ukraine and the US" – Andrii Sybiha
Despite being described as "nearly done" by a U.S. official, the deal faces hurdles primarily due to Ukraine's insistence on security guarantees. The absence of these guarantees raises concerns about the fairness of the agreement. As one source pointedly remarked,
"It is a strange offer to try and take from a country that is a victim of war, more than it cost to pay for its defence."
As discussions progress, Ukraine seeks to negotiate amendments to the draft deal to ensure it aligns with their strategic security interests. The U.S. remains keen on securing access to Ukraine's resources, but the lack of concrete American commitments in the draft has stalled finalization.
