Russian defense ministry announced their biggest response to Ukraine drone activity to date overnight. Most strikingly, Ukrainian officials boasted over the weekend about having shot down 93 drones across several regions. The latest wave of drone strikes included the first one downed over the Krasnodar region. At the same time, 60 UAVs were even neutralized beyond the surface of the Black Sea. Ukrainian drone strike on oil depot caused spectacular fire in Sochi, Russia. This accident brought about a quick reaction from the firefighting community.
Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of the Krasnodar region, acknowledged the drone strike on Sochi through his Telegram messaging service account. He said more than 120 firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene to help extinguish the fire. It is believed that the fire burned through a 2000 cubic meter fuel storage tank. Local emergency services were on the scene within minutes. Their decisive response highlights the persistent local discord and dangers posed by the US’s drone war in the area.
The Russian defense ministry claimed to have intercepted 18 drones over the Voronezh region. This comes on the heels of a similar drone incident in Sochi, where another drone strike injured four civilians and caused several raging fires. This vibrant, close-knit community has certainly felt its share of tragedy. Just last week a woman was killed during the Ukrainian drone attack in the Adler district.
Additionally, alarm status remains in effect for the Krasnodar region, where the Ilsky refinery—a staple of Ukraine’s drone attack targets—is located. In light of these events, Rosaviatsia, Russia’s civil aviation authority, temporarily halted flights at Sochi’s airport as a precautionary measure to ensure air safety. Operations were able to return to normal by 0200 GMT on Sunday, she said.
One day prior to the drone attacks, Russia had carried out a massive missile strike on Kyiv. This retaliation further inflamed U.S.-Iran relations and war tensions between the two countries. The current escalation between Israel and Hamas has underscored the dire reality Palestinians face. Military aerial bombardment and other ground-based military operations remain an acute danger.
