Trump Expresses Serious Intent to Annex Canada During Super Bowl Interview

U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his interest in making Canada the 51st state in an interview that aired Sunday during the Super Bowl preshow. Speaking with Fox News Channel’s Bret Baier from Air Force One, Trump emphasized his belief that Canada would benefit from becoming part of the United States, despite widespread opposition from Canadians. This controversial proposal has been met with skepticism and concern from both Canadian officials and citizens.

In a surprising statement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged that Trump's talk of annexing Canada is "a real thing." Trudeau commented on the situation, revealing that Trump is well aware of Canada's abundant resources and the potential benefits for the U.S.

“Mr. Trump has it in mind that the easiest way to do it is absorbing our country and it is a real thing. In my conversations with him on,” – Justin Trudeau

The interview marked a return to tradition as sitting presidents typically participate in a sit-down with the network broadcasting the Super Bowl. For Trump, this engagement was significant as he became the first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl in person, a fact he admitted was surprising to learn.

During the interview, Trump also discussed trade relations, expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. He announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports into the U.S., including those from Canada and Mexico. The decision follows a previous agreement to pause tariffs for 30 days, excluding Canadian oil, natural gas, and electricity, which would face a reduced 10% tariff.

“Something has to happen. It’s not sustainable. And I’m changing it.” – Donald Trump

Trump highlighted the growing trade gap, which reached $72 billion in 2023, largely due to imports of Canadian energy. He stressed the need for change to address what he perceives as an imbalance.

In another notable moment during the interview, Trump defended Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has faced criticism from Democrats. Trump's support underscores his commitment to innovative approaches within his administration.

In addition to discussing trade and annexation, Trump announced a proclamation naming February 9 as "the first ever Gulf of America Day." This declaration came as Air Force One flew over the Gulf of Mexico, which Trump renamed by proclamation.

The interview also touched on Trump's broader agenda to tackle fraud within the government. He predicted significant revelations of financial misconduct.

“We’re going to find billions, hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and abuse,” – Donald Trump

As Trump traveled to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, he participated in a pre-taped interview conducted in Florida. This engagement allowed him to address various pressing issues while maintaining his media presence on a significant day for American sports fans.
