China, Russia, and Iran have embarked on joint naval exercises in the Gulf of Oman, displaying a show of maritime strength and cooperation. The exercises, part of the "Security Belt-2025" drills, commenced near the Iranian port of Chabahar. This marks the fifth such collaboration between these nations since 2019. The exercises aim to counterbalance U.S. influence in the region and challenge the Western-led global order.
China has deployed its Type 052D guided-missile destroyer Baotou, accompanied by the supply ship Gaoyouhu. Meanwhile, Iran has contributed a stealth missile corvette and a patrol ship. Russia's involvement includes a fleet of 15 combat ships, support vessels, and gunboats, augmented by helicopters. These exercises underscore a growing partnership among these authoritarian powers.
The Gulf of Oman serves as a critical junction for seaborne trade, linking the Indian Ocean to the Strait of Hormuz. This area is particularly strategic as over one-quarter of the world's oil supply passes through the Strait. The presence of these naval forces in such a vital location highlights their strategic ambitions.
The Chinese Defense Ministry stated that these exercises aim to "enhance military trust and strengthen practical cooperation." This sentiment reflects the collective intent of China, Russia, and Iran to present a united front against perceived Western dominance.
Simultaneously, the U.S. maintains a significant naval presence in the region through its Fifth Fleet, headquartered in Bahrain. Despite this show of force by China, Russia, and Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump downplayed concerns, stating:
“We’re stronger than all of them. We have more power than all of them.” – Donald Trump
These drills occur amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran. The geopolitical landscape has been further complicated by Russia's bolstered military relations with North Korea. Over the past year, Russia and North Korea have signed a mutual defense agreement, with North Korea reportedly sending troops to support Moscow's efforts in Ukraine.
