Donald and Maria Nunney, an elderly couple from Cleveland, Ohio, met with an especially heartbreaking end. They perished in a vehicle crash on August 15. The Nunney family was en route to lunch with their oldest son, Noah Nunney, who attends the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Early this morning, unannounced to us, their vehicle drifted off interstate and collided with multiple trees.
Donald Nunney, 55, and Maria Nunney, 50, were described by family members as loving parents who doted on their children. The couple leaves behind four children: Noah, 19, a student at the University of North Carolina; Diego, 18, who remained in Cleveland for work that day; Lucia, 15; and Leo, 9.
Lucia and Leo Nunney survived the crash, but both were severely injured. All three were quickly airlifted to a local trauma hospital for acute management. Family members have started an online fundraising campaign to cover funeral costs. They want to serve as guides as you care for the Nunney children through this difficult period.
“Don … was a loving, doting father. He loved Maria more than anything in the world, and he was just there for everybody,” – Meredith Nunney McCarthy
Witnesses and family friends remembered Maria Nunney as an outgoing young woman. She made the people around her happier than they would have been without her. Those who knew her remember her larger-than-life presence, her laughter that was contagious.
“Maria pretty much lit up every room she was in. She had a big laugh,” – Sandro Galindo
The family copes with this tragic loss on the strength and hope that their beloved Quentin would have wanted them to. Relatives and friends have rallied around them, giving emotional and financial support.
“They have a really good support system with … both sides of the family, so we’re doing the best we can to be there for them,” – Meredith Nunney McCarthy
In response the community has rallied to share their love and support for the Nunney family. Yet friends and acquaintances are going above and beyond to assist. They just want to see the kids cared for, in the wake of this horrible tragedy.
