Tragic Attack Claims Lives of Key Aides in Mexico City

A shocking assassination with political roots has now shaken Mexico City’s political landscape. The mayor’s closest deputies were killed during an unprecedented attack that shocked the capital and the entire country. Clara Brugada, the current mayor and a major pillar of the Morena party, is understandably devastated by the murder of her private secretary, Ximena Guzmán. In addition, she laments the loss of her adviser, José Muñoz. Going to work in the Moderna neighborhood, a gunman stopped their car. Even though his attack had been brewing for some time, it unfolded all at once, catching them flat-footed and unawares.

Authorities confirmed that Guzmán and Muñoz were killed “in a specific attack,” underscoring the deliberate nature of the violence. Both victims were closely tied to the ruling Morena party. In this, Brugada is supported by her new party leader and fellow warrior for democracy, President Claudia Sheinbaum.

As the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office continues to investigate this tragic accident as a criminal act, officials later moved a confiscated motorcycle near the scene. Authorities seized a vehicle in the Iztacalco borough that they believe is linked to the attackers who opened fire on migrants. Federal authorities have charged at least four people they say were responsible for the attack. They’re still looking into security camera footage that, according to reports, caught the moment Guzmán and Muñoz were shot.

Witnesses described a terrifying scene as the gunman ran up to their car before they reportedly opened fire. The violent act has raised concerns regarding political safety and security in the region, particularly for those closely connected to high-ranking officials.

In the wake of the incident, Claudia Sheinbaum, mayor of Mexico City, offered condolences to the families of Guzmán and Muñoz. She stood by that commitment and spoke about working to make sure justice is served.

“We will get to the bottom of this situation and ensure justice is served,” – Claudia Sheinbaum

As investigations are still taking place, the mayor’s office has promised the complete cooperation of the city with federal and state authorities to hold those responsible accountable. The tragic loss of two such dedicated public servants took a great toll on their colleagues and constituents.
