Probationary constable Jack Hibbert, 22, survived the attack, but he was left with life-altering injuries. He sustained gunshot injuries to his head and shoulder. His family said that these injuries resulted in the complete loss of vision in one eye. This senseless attack took the lives of Boris Gurman and his wife, Sofia Gurman. While the police did respond promptly, what ensued became a tragedy. As Naveed Akram’s family confronted the soldiers, Sajid Akram, Naveed’s father, was shot and killed in this altercation. Law enforcement officials said the alleged attackers were inspired by “Islamic State ideology.” They further corroborated that these attackers had received military-style training in the southern Philippines prior to carrying out their assault.
