Scott Derrickson's new film, "The Gorge," now streaming on Apple TV+, captivates audiences with an impressive blend of action, sci-fi, romance, and horror. Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller star in this thrilling cinematic adventure that features a unique and intense sequence involving a Jeep precariously raised along a massive cliff face. The film's climactic scene, which showcases a lengthy fight sequence, took months of preparation and several days to shoot, highlighting the actors' dedication and the practical challenges involved.
Taylor-Joy and Teller, renowned for their commitment to their roles, underwent extensive stunt training for the movie. Their preparation began on the ground, mastering movements before transitioning to harnesses and platforms. This rigorous training was essential for executing the demanding stunts required for the Jeep sequence.
"Anya and I, when we first started doing the stunt training, I think we started on the ground getting the movements, and then they put us on harnesses, and we were working on some different platforms," – Miles Teller
The Jeep model used in the film was smaller than anticipated, adding to the complexity of the scene. Despite its size, the vehicle was integral to one of the film's most ambitious scenes, requiring meticulous rehearsals over several months. This dedication to realism reflects the filmmakers' commitment to delivering a captivating viewing experience.
"What's incredible about this movie is so much of it is practical," – Anya Taylor-Joy
"We used very little CGI, so most of the gorge was built on a sound stage and we were doing everything that you see us doing in the film. So that was a Jeep that was slowly moving upwards whilst we were doing acrobatic fighting around all of it." – Anya Taylor-Joy
This practical approach presented unique challenges for the actors. Teller candidly shared his experience during filming, noting the physical demands and relief upon completing the scene.
"So," he says, "just the practicality of it presented some unique challenges for us. I definitely got a little banged up filming that. We were very happy when that was done." – Miles Teller
The intense physicality of the film fostered a strong bond between Taylor-Joy and Teller. The duo navigated each challenge with determination, enhancing their on-screen chemistry and contributing to the film's gripping narrative.
"What's crazy about this film is there was a point kind of halfway through filming where every single day was a set piece, and so you were kind of rolling into each new challenge, carrying the other challenge on your back," – Anya Taylor-Joy
