Clarence House, one of the most important official residences of the British royal family, has a history of its own that dates back almost 200 years. Clarence House today Known architect John Nash, who created the landmark Buckingham Palace, designed Clarence House. Construction on the road began in 1825 and was completed in 1827. It was meant to be an extravagant residence for the son of King George III, future King William IV. In the decades since, it’s become a cherished family compound.
The house became the residence of the Duke of Connaught and remained until his death in 1942. Later on, it became an important place for military efforts in World War II. It was instrumental in accepting the War Organisation of the British Red Cross and the Order of St. John of Jerusalem to jointly form the Joint War Organisation (JWO).
Clarence House was allocated a different role in the royal family. Queen Elizabeth, then Princess Elizabeth, became its first resident upon her marriage to Prince Philip in 1947. That couple lived there until Queen Elizabeth became queen in 1952 and moved to Buckingham Palace. Later, Clarence House was inherited by her mother, the Queen Mother, and her sister, Princess Margaret.
Under their stewardship Clarence House saw remarkable renovations and redesigns. The Queen Mother’s unique flavor continues to permeate the abode, evident in her massive residences of porcelain and paintings that dotted the walls. The legacy of Highgrove continued as over the years, the property was inherited by King Charles III (then Prince Charles).
