Kamilah’s Texas family is sharing their incredible birth story with the world. This is what Nicole McGee saw when she pulled up outside Methodist Dallas Medical Center on September 2. The newborn has made quite the splash already, stealing hearts and even going viral. Known as “our princess Kamilah” to her family, she starts her story from home with her mom, dad and two big sisters.
Kamilah’s mother, Angelica Martinez, began to experience contractions as the family was leaving for the hospital, only two blocks down the road. In an incredible stroke of luck, her fiancé, Luis Mendoza, was just behind in their SUV and immediately got out to help her. As the contractions became stronger, Mendoza skillfully caught their daughter as she was born, without medical personnel right there with her.
“Two blocks away from the hospital, [Martinez] started having big contractions,” said Mendoza, reflecting on the unexpected events that unfolded that day.
Through grit and grace combined, Luis Mendoza was able to receive Kamilah at the last possible moment after Angelica had delivered. He picked up their newborn and placed her on her mama’s belly for the very first time, creating a truly magical moment for this sweet family.
Kamilah’s early arrival would prove to be more than a surprise blessing. Her arrival would stand as a testament to the union of her parents. Having returned home, the family feels blessed by how quickly their newest family member came. “We are very, very grateful that everything turned out well,” remarked Angelica Martinez.
The couple’s daughters are 10 and 16. She already has two big brothers and three big sisters, and they are all excited to have a precious new little sister! The celebration accompanying Kamilah’s birth has motivated the Edwards family to become even more united as they enter this unknown chapter.
Community members have detailed their respect and gratitude for Mendoza’s swift actions at such an innovative and critical juncture. Carrie Urista, a family friend, said, “Dad was the day’s hero.” She illustrated Mendoza’s importance, using as an example a healthy delivery to the hospital.
