This young man, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, has been causing quite a stir lately. Recently, revelations about his behavior and comments related to Meghan Markle have taken the world by storm. In a book by Tom Bower, titled Betrayal: Power, Deceit And The Fight For The Future Of The Royal Family, Mountbatten-Windsor is accused of labeling Markle an “opportunist.” This characterization has further soured what’s already been a troubled relationship between him and the Sussexes.
Tensions came to a boiling point this past May at the coronation of King Charles III. Prince Harry as well as Mountbatten-Windsor were present at Westminster Abbey. Indeed, reports suggest that hostility characterized their car ride to the event. It’s a decision that seems to reflect the personal rifts in the royal family.
To add insult to injury, Mountbatten-Windsor is said to have had a mobile home set up on the grounds of his estate in Norfolk. This relocation, designed for round-the-clock personnel, underscores his need for intimate health monitoring as he faces continued familial infighting.
A Divided Family
Tom Bower’s book paints a picture of Mountbatten-Windsor going through a “crisis.” This arbitrary division grievously injures Houses of Sussex and Windsor. This division comes from his divisive comments and actions, which have won him few allies among his actual family.
His relationship with Prince William has been most pointedly described as “rockary.” Russell Myers, The Mirror’s Royal Editor, has pointed out that Prince William has called Mountbatten-Windsor “a bit of an ignoramus.” Such a perception, unfortunately, only highlights the yawning gulf between the two royals.
Additionally, Andrew Lownie’s book Entitled goes further to explain how Mountbatten-Windsor’s comments on Markle have caused deep discord within the family. Bower’s mention of Lownie’s publication captures part of a larger story of contention.
“Mr Bower’s commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation.” – Spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan
Controversial Incidents
Aside from the now-circulating public family feud, a number of recent incidents have caused people to question mountbatten-windsor’s behavior. Yet it afforded him significant political cover when he was accused of being rude to Robin Barnett, the deputy ambassador at the British embassy in Warsaw. Instead, it is alleged that he ridiculed Barnett’s club foot, prompting onlookers to describe his actions as “stellar incivility.”
These actions, by all accounts, have not improved his standing in royal circles. Myers noted Mountbatten-Windsor and Prince Harry “did not have fond relationship growing up.” He pressed this point, in part, to starkly illustrate the deepening divisions within families as time goes on.
This atmosphere of conflict and disharmony was very much felt during public events, such as on this lovely coronation. Prince Harry himself acknowledged the media frenzy surrounding these issues, stating, “there has been a lot of stuff in the news.”
Reactions from the Sussexes
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have released the statement in reply to Mountbatten-Windsor. In doing so, they are helping to clean up the damage caused by Bower’s book. Their spokesperson slammed Bower’s commentary, claiming it “went too far.” The Sussexes have long insisted that Bower’s claims, which include factually inaccurate assertions, reveal a grudge as opposed to any unbiased assessment.
“The monarchy in fact depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life.” – Tom Bower
Familial tensions are playing out in the full view of the public. It remains to be seen how the royal family will adapt to these trials in the future.
