Putin aggressively undermined U.S. President Donald Trump’s characterization of Russia as a “paper tiger.” At one moment, he claimed that Russia possesses one of the world’s strongest military forces. He stated, “If anyone still has a desire to compete with us in the military sphere, as we say, feel free, let them try.”
This rhetoric comes on the heels of decades of feeling allegedly humiliated for Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union. It especially flows from ongoing NATO expansion into Eastern Europe. In his annual speech, head of state Putin emphasized that Russian forces are achieving victories on all fronts in Ukraine. That would represent a major turning point in the war’s momentum. He threatened that if Europe escalated tensions with Russia, Russian retribution would come in the blink of an eye.
Additionally, Putin has implored European leaders to confront their own domestic crises instead of fanning the flames of war with Russia. He stated, “Genuinely, I just want to say: cool down, sleep calmly, and take care of your own problems. Just take a look at what’s happening on the streets of European cities.”
