27-year-old Erin Dempsey is a recent Canadian-trained teacher. She was struck off the teaching register in England after partaking in a string of illicit encounters with an underage student. Dempsey began teaching history at Furze Platt Senior School in Maidenhead, Berkshire, in September 2023. Her resignation from the post came in April 2024. Her tenure was marked by serious breaches of professional standards.

A spokesperson for the school emphasized its commitment to safeguarding, stating, “We continue to ensure that our staff meet the highest possible safeguarding standards. Our priority remains supporting and educating our students to become fantastic, successful young adults.”
Dempsey’s actions were a blatant violation of the fiduciary duty owed by educators to their students. Even if she appeared to be personally driven to assist the student, her actions were egregious. Her interactions with the student went well beyond what we can expect from educators. This discrepancy cast significant doubt on her fitness to instruct.
After being suspended for weeks, Dempsey finally resigned from her post in April 2024. The decision to remove her from the teaching register without chance of appeal underlines the extreme nature of her wrongdoing. It’s a good reminder and warning to other educators out there to never cross any such boundaries with students.
