34-year-old mathematics teacher Benjamin Hiscox has received an immediate and indefinite ban from the teaching profession after a serious misconduct investigation. Hiscox was working at South Nottinghamshire Academy in Radcliffe on Trent, Nottinghamshire, when the allegations came to light.
That inquiry revealed that Hiscox had a sexual relationship with a student he taught while still in his training mode. This all happened on a warm summer day at Madras College in St Andrews, Fife.… the young lady … was a pupil at that college while Mr. Hiscox was passing his course of teacher training. The evidentiary findings by the Board that Hiscox did send sexually explicit images and videos to the girl demonstrated his evident unfitness to practice in a professional manner.
Alarmingly, the conduct continued to deepen. By October 2022, Hiscox had scheduled a time to meet the underage girl in a hotel. On 28 October 2022, she drank heavily and had sexual intercourse with the accused man several times. In additional infuriating pre-visit communications, Hiscox insisted that the girl wear her school uniform. They even suggested going so far as to gift the payment in sex toy form.
Their romantic connection had started to build through social media, with the girl following Hiscox on Instagram earlier that month. Reports suggest that, almost immediately, their conversations became sexually charged. Hiscox argued that he was unaware of the girl’s age or that she had formerly been his student. As far as the panel judging the case was concerned, there was no justification for his misbehavior.
David Oatley, a member of the panel, stated that Hiscox’s behavior “fell significantly short of the standards expected of the profession.” The misconduct was such that the panel agreed that Hiscox’s suspension should be made permanent. He agreed to six of the eight allegations against him, conceding that he acted willfully and with malice.
