The wildfires raging through Los Angeles have claimed the lives of 25 people as of January 15. The fires have forced hundreds of thousands of residents to evacuate their homes, leaving a trail of destruction that has damaged or destroyed over 12,000 structures. Amid this catastrophe, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have extended their support to those affected, particularly in Meghan's native Los Angeles.
The Sussexes have proactively contributed to relief efforts through their Archewell Foundation. They have donated to the Altadena Girls Fire Recovery Fund, a charity founded by 14-year-old Avery Colvert. This initiative supports teenage girls in the area who have been profoundly impacted by the fires, helping them regain their sense of self and confidence.
"In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighbourhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centres, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life,"
In a heartfelt statement, the couple emphasized the importance of community support during such trying times. They urged those who can offer shelter to friends or loved ones displaced by the fires to do so. In line with this plea, they have opened their Montecito home to provide sanctuary for friends affected by the disaster.
"If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do. And be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbours to see if they need help evacuating."
The Archewell Foundation has also extended its support to local food banks, ensuring essential supplies reach those in need. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed; Altadena Girls expressed gratitude on Instagram with a "special thanks" for the foundation's contribution.
Avery Colvert, inspired to act after witnessing the fires' impact on her peers, launched Altadena Girls with a mission to restore normalcy and joy to teenagers' lives. Her charity underscores the significance of community-driven initiatives in times of crisis.
"By contributing, you help us fund the necessary items that bring smiles back to our teenagers' faces and a sense of normalcy back to their lives."
The fires have had widespread repercussions beyond immediate physical damage. Meghan's Netflix show, "With Love, Meghan," has been postponed due to the ongoing situation in Los Angeles.
