The United States Supreme Court has issued a rare statement rebuking President Donald Trump after he called for the impeachment of a federal judge. Trump's remarks, made in a lengthy post, have sparked controversy and concern over potential violations of judicial independence.

President Trump has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with Judge James Boasberg, who he believes has obstructed his administration's immigration policies. In November 2023, Trump called for the impeachment of both Boasberg and the lead prosecutor in the case. The President's administration continued with deportations under a rarely invoked act, last used during World War II, leading to speculation that it had openly defied Boasberg's orders.

Representative Brandon Gill has taken action by filing articles of impeachment against Judge Boasberg, labeling him a "radical activist." This move highlights ongoing tensions between Trump's administration and the judiciary. Boasberg, who has been appointed by both Republican and Democratic presidents, has not yet ruled on whether the administration violated court orders.

Chief Justice John Roberts defended the judiciary against such political pressure, emphasizing the importance of the appellate review process over impeachment for addressing judicial disagreements.

Despite the current uproar, the impeachment of federal judges remains a rare occurrence. Congress holds the authority to impeach judges, though it is an infrequent event. The last federal judge to face impeachment was G Thomas Porteous in 2010, who was removed from office due to accusations of bribery and issuing false statements.
