Supported Internship Program Empowers Autistic Youth in Warwickshire

Andy’s son, Harry, has found success in the Darlaston workforce. He achieved this via a supported internship programme at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College. This initiative, aimed at aiding young people with learning disabilities, provides tailored job coaching and life skills support alongside a 10-week work placement. Earlier this year, Harry finished his internship at Nuneaton Signs, a sign manufacturing firm in Warwickshire. This experience had a profound impact on Wil’s confidence and social development.

The evidence-supported internship program has been key in helping Harry turn his life around. Andy Darlaston, 56, thanked the scheme for helping him. He added that Harry is now “thriving” because of the opportunities it has opened up for him. He concluded by saying that the process has left their family “completely, utterly ecstatic.”

Harry’s story is one example of what this new program can do, and by all accounts, it’s been working so well that it’s been extended for a fifth year. It means nine more interns will be joining Asda in Nuneaton as part of the next intake. This expansion will significantly increase the program’s reach and impact.

When the call ended, Paula Jeffries from the college shared some wonderful news! Almost two-thirds of the nonprofit’s program students have gone on to earn paid positions over the last four years. This is a dramatic difference from national figures. They illustrate that only 4.8% of adults with autism or a learning difficulty are able to secure paid employment.

The supported internship program provides a vital bridge for young people like Harry. It benefits people who can’t otherwise navigate the recruiting gauntlet. Jeffries emphasized that, for many people who want to work, obstacles arise when they go through the traditional job application process.

See, his father was so moved by Harry’s experience that he wasn’t simply content to check the box and move on. He’s gained confidence, he’s made new friends. He’s really opened up and blossomed! This change in his environment has really helped him thrive,” said Mr. Darlaston. He told how the program and Nuneaton Signs helped transform their lives. Without their support, his family would not be living the joy-filled life that they are enjoying today.
