Sunny Soars: Big Bear Eaglet Takes First Flight

Sunny, one of the most furry and favored eaglets from the Friends of Big Bear Valley, has made her public departure from the nest official. On June 2, 2025, that same eaglet left the nest and flew for the first time. To her, this moment was a major step toward independence. Eagle lovers have been following this extraordinary chapter in nature on the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam. From the moment Sunny and her hatch-mate, Gizmo, hatched in early March to now, viewers have been enthralled.

Sunny and Gizmo are some of the latest products of the new eagle couple Jackie and Shadow. One of the hardest moments was when their family faced an eviction. Then an unexpected winter storm pathosically claimed the life of their third sibling. Though we still mourn this loss, we can rejoice in the fact that all eaglets still with us have blossomed in their loving parents’ care.

Witnessing Sunny’s inaugural flight was a heartstopping moment, hopefully for most. As she approached her historic flight, all the world could see her spirit of resolve. “She put up her wings to catch the wind and then jumped up and let those beautiful wings carry her,” shared a representative from the Friends of Big Bear Valley.

>After launch, Sunny flew home to her family’s beloved roost tree. There, she will advance her development to the next level. Gizmo observed intently, intrigued by her sister’s new skill. “Gizmo watched the whole thing from right beside Sunny. She looked completely fascinated and kept her eyes on Sunny flying away from the nest,” a spokesperson for the Friends reported.

As of now, Gizmo is still in the nest being doted on by Jackie and Shadow. The involved parents are dedicated to raising Gizmo but preparing Sunny for the world outside of the nest. “They are bringing her food, guarding her and teaching her all that she needs to know to be out in the world,” the Friends of Big Bear Valley stated. Along with all of this they still need to care for Gizmo. Gizmo has a lot to think about.

The community of Big Bear Valley has been deeply involved in tracking the eaglets journey from hatching to their first flight. The excitement around Sunny’s departure is palpable. “Congratulations, Sunny! As we get to feel exuberance for this beautiful success and at the same time, sadness for change that means seeing her less often,” expressed the Friends of Big Bear Valley. “Sunny is out in the world!”
