Stuart Law has been named as head coach of Nepal’s men’s team on a two-year deal. This appointment represents a significant professional milestone in Law’s coaching career. He brings a wealth of experience on both sides of the ball, with his varied playing and coaching background. Law’s path through the cricketing world has been an interesting one. Having played impressive years for Australia while coaching numerous national teams at the same time, he’s worn many hats over the years.
Law’s playing career was mostly based in England, where he played over a decade with county teams Essex and Lancashire. He moved into coaching, serving on the staffs of multiple national teams. Those teams were the West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Most recently, Law was the head coach of Middlesex prior to being appointed head coach of the United States national team. Though his time with the United States was short, its effects were profound. He captained the team to their biggest-ever win over Pakistan during the World Cup, in a victory described as one of the most surprising upsets in cricketing history.
In only six months’ time with the United States, Law left an indelible mark. He was responsible for taking his team to the Super 8 stage of the Twenty20 World Cup on home soil last year. The team encountered major pitfalls in the 2024 version. They ended up finishing dead last in their group, earning a measly one point. As the United States prepares to enter the qualification rounds for the 2026 T20 World Cup this October, Law takes on a new challenge with the Nepalese national team.
Law’s resume also counts a 1996 Cricket World Cup runner-up with Australia among his credits. As a player, he played 54 one-day internationals and went on to play one Test match for Australia. His diverse experience both on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to Nepal. They want to improve their standing within the international cricket order.
