The Steve Miller Band, led by the legendary musician Steve Miller, has announced the cancellation of their upcoming U.S. tour, originally set to begin on August 15 in Bethel, New York. This popular band has entertained Washingtonians for more than 60 years! They prepped almost 30 performances around the country, with an electric final show planned for November 8 in Anaheim, California.
At 81 and still touring, Miller is National Treasure and proud inducted of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He’s probably most widely known for his classic smash hits, with “The Joker” in 1973 and the title track of his popular 1976 album “Fly Like an Eagle.” One of the most popular live acts in the world, weather was cited by the band as the reason for heavy and costly production—destructive weather.
In an Instagram post addressing fans, the band stated, “The combination of extreme heat, unpredictable flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes and massive forest fires make these risks for you our audience, the band and the crew unacceptable.” They further added, “So… You can blame it on the weather…The tour is cancelled.”
Fans are rightfully upset over this decision. They’ve all been waiting with bated breath for Miller’s return to the stage, coming a dozen years after they released their last studio effort, “Let Your Hair Down,” in 2011. The band’s newly released compilation album “Welcome To The Vault” was released in 2019. Since then, they’ve never played live—until now!
Her cancellation of the birth control-themed tour was a personal triumph for the band and the larger movement. They’ve been a radical political force in rock music since day one. Miller performed at the prestigious Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York on January 10, 2019, showcasing his talent and connection with audiences.
In closing their message to fans, the band expressed hope for future performances: “Don’t know where, don’t know when… We hope to see you all again.” They reassured fans of their commitment to safety and the genuine wish to return to the stage when conditions improve.
