Sentebale Under Scrutiny as Charity Commission Reports Governance Concerns

Sentebale, the charity co-founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso in 2006, is under attack. The Charity Commission has previously expressed serious governance issues of the charity, including its lack of independence. Established to support vulnerable children in Lesotho and Botswana, Sentebale—meaning “forget-me-not” in the Sesotho language—aims to provide critical care for young people facing challenges such as HIV/AIDS and mental health issues. The charity’s effects have been deep, reaching over 100,000 young people throughout southern Africa since its creation.

Dr Sophie Chandauka, Chair of Sentebale, then made explosive claims of abuse of power and discrimination against the charity. Turf, air quality, and equity implications. This investigation calls into question the very leadership and operational practices of Sentebale. The charity’s mission is closely linked to the personal histories of its founders, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso, who founded the charity in honour of their mothers—Princess Diana and Queen ‘Mamohato.

Even as the foundation confronts disturbing new truths, it remains committed to its purpose. This year, it expects to reach more than 78,000 children and youth. Prince Harry last visited Lesotho in support of Sentebale in October 2024, much reestablishing his dedication to the cause.

Governance Concerns Raised

The Charity Commission’s investigation found substantial governance failings in Sentebale. Further, it underscored issues concerning the clarity of roles, how powers were delegated, and decision-making authority. Dr. Sophie Chandauka, a former trustee, expressed her concerns about the organizational culture after calling out bullying, sexism, and racism among the Board of Trustees.

In her response to the Charity Commission’s investigation, Dr. Chandauka welcomed the findings, stating that.

“I appreciate the Charity Commission for its conclusions which confirm the governance concerns I raised privately in February 2025.” – Dr Sophie Chandauka MBE, Chair of Sentebale

Unsurprisingly, the report notes that these challenges were forced upon them by an “unforeseen contrary media blitz.” This campaign, she argued, has caused “incalculable damage” to the charity’s reputation and operations. The campaign was said to be the result of transom resignations in the group.

A spokesperson for Prince Harry said his co-founder had been cleared of any wrongdoing in the findings.

“Unsurprisingly, the Commission makes no findings of wrongdoing in relation to Sentebale’s Co-Founder and former Patron, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex.” – A spokesperson for Prince Harry

A Commitment to Vulnerable Youth

Sentebale has changed the lives of young people in southern Africa since its founding—in immeasurable ways. The nonprofit on the ground fighting for children in care with HIV/AIDS. It’s equally important that it provides support to people dealing with mental health crises. Since 2010, Sentebale’s annual Polo Cup has raised more than £11 million to fund its work.

Dr. Chandauka emphasized the deep personal bond that fuels Prince Harry’s dedication to Sentebale.

“Sentebale has been a deeply personal and transformative mission for Prince Harry, established to serve some of the most vulnerable children in Lesotho and Botswana.” – Dr Sophie Chandauka MBE, Chair of Sentebale

The charity is a lifeline during this difficult time. It manages its way through these challenges, and the organization stays committed to its mission.

The Future of Sentebale

In response to these recent challenges, Sentebale has acted. Since the pandemic began, our organization has shifted its work to provide greater service to young people who need it the most. The Charity Commission has highlighted serious governance failings. The group is all about looking ahead and getting tangible results in the lives of children.

Prince Harry extended his appreciation to the dedicated staff and board members who continue to be resolute in their dedication to Sentebale’s mission.

“I thank every dedicated colleague and the courageous new Board members who have stayed focused on the mission in the face of unprecedented media glare.” – A statement attributed to Prince Harry or Sentebale

Governance issues were specifically highlighted by a spokesperson for Prince Harry. They underscored the impact on the people who depend on Sentebale’s assistance.

“Despite all that, their report falls troublingly short in many regards, primarily the fact that the consequences of the current Chair’s actions will not be borne by her – but by the children who rely on Sentebale’s support.” – A spokesperson for Prince Harry

The Chief Executive of the Charity Commission, David Holdsworth, warned of the risks that come with passion-led enterprises.

“Passion for a cause is the bedrock of volunteering and charity, delivering positive impact for millions of people here at home and abroad every day.” – David Holdsworth

He added the complication comes when that passion turns into harmful action on an organization.

“However, in the rare cases when things go wrong, it is often because that very passion has become a weakness rather than a strength.” – David Holdsworth
