Segway Recalls 220,000 Scooters Across the U.S. Due to Fall Hazard

Segway Inc. is recalling approximately 220,000 of their scooter personal transporters, which were sold in the U.S. This decision follows many injuries you’ve seen due to a fall hazard. The firm has received 68 reports of folding mechanism malfunctions. These failures have resulted in 20 reported injuries, the majority of which include abrasions and bruises but as serious as lacerations and fractures.

The recall, announced on Segway's website, includes tools and step-by-step instructions for consumers to inspect and adjust the scooters' locking mechanism. This mechanism certainly constitutes a critical component of the scooters, and its failure presents an unreasonable risk of serious injury.

Defective locking mechanisms have prompted warnings from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission that children can become seriously injured when these fail. If you have a recalled scooter, please cease and desist immediately! Contact Segway directly to claim your free maintenance kit.

All of the scooters involved in this most recent recall were made in China and Malaysia. But you can’t get them in many retail locations, including the country’s biggest retailers, such as Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target and Sam’s Club. They’re sold on new online marketplaces like Segway.com and Amazon.com.

Maintenance Segway has stressed the importance of routine inspection of the folding mechanism to prevent use of the scooter if it becomes loose.

"Over time, depending on riding conditions, the folding mechanism may require periodic checks and tightening." – Segway

U.S. consumers should immediately cease using recalled devices according to Segway’s recall instructions and therefore avoid further incidents. In doing so, the company has focused on the safety and satisfaction of their customers, taking this issue seriously and addressing it right away.
