The request to reopen US airspace to Russian aircraft was made by Russian negotiators during this bilateral meeting. This comes in the aftermath of restrictions imposed in February 2022, when Ukraine's allies, including the US, banned Russian planes from entering their airspaces. In response, Russia closed its airspace to numerous countries, although most Western airlines had already ceased flying over Russian territory by that time.
