Royal Family Commemorates 80th Anniversary of VE Day at Westminster Abbey

Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Prince William flanked King Charles III at Westminster Abbey on Friday. They had come to remember the 80th Anniversary of VE Day with a moving and dignified Service of Thanksgiving. This important anniversary does not memorialize directly; it gave us a chance to remember the sacrifices that occurred during the Second World War.

To welcome them, the Princess of Wales chose a dramatic outfit. She accessorized with a striking white crepe silk dress – with matching coat designed by Anna Valentine – adorned with large black embroidery. And just to complete the conundrum of her irresistible ensemble, she outfitted herself with a sophisticated black-and-white Philip Treacy chapeau. The arrival of the royal couple together welcomed all in with a sense of togetherness and gratitude.

Once the service started, Catherine continued reaching out to those gathered. She knelt on the ground to be at eye level with the woman. By holding her hand, just talking to her, she expressed her concern, compassion and love—warmth—for veterans. Her smile radiated warmth and joy as she mingled with participants and connected with the community after the service.

In a moving tribute, Catherine and William placed floral tributes at the Innocent Victims’ Memorial, located outside the Abbey. Their bridal arrangement consisted of colorful seasonal flowers, such as pink, white, and peach roses. The message on their wreath conveyed heartfelt sentiments:

“For those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Second World War. We will remember them. William and Catherine.” – Prince and Princess of Wales

These floral tributes honored those who lost their lives. They represented the couple’s promise to respect their legacy.

Catherine opted for this AWESOME white skirted Alessandra Rich polka dot dress. She last appeared in this pretty ensemble for the Order of the Garter Day service in June 2023. Her style decisions this time reflected thoughtful planning alongside Queen Camilla. Both women donned varying hues of white and cream, signifying their unity towards this historic day.

During the Thanksgiving service, Catherine kept sneaking peeks at Prince William. Their adoring gazes enchanted attendees and served as a testament to the beauty of their connection. Just last month, the proud couple marked their 14th wedding anniversary. This milestone underscored their long-standing collaboration and dedication to one another.

Once the ceremony was over, Catherine went over to place a small bunch of mixed blooms at the memorial. Though moving, this act highlighted the royal family’s longstanding determination to honour those who died in the war. Yet the moving scene only highlighted the gravity of this moment — the passing of the torch. It revealed the royal family’s profound personal connection with history, and its heroes.
