Royal Ceremony Highlights Princess Kate’s Return to the Order of the Garter

Earlier this week, King Charles III presided over this year’s Order of the Garter ceremony. This venerated ceremony recognizes only a handful of artists and thinkers whose works have shaped our country. This year’s ceremony, held at Windsor Castle, marked a notable return for the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, who missed last year’s event due to cancer treatment.

In her stead, King Charles III was supported by Queen Camilla, members of the royal family. Surprisingly, one of them was the Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie Wessex. The Order of the Garter is limited to 24 Companions. The sovereign personally appoints these men and women generally to recognize their service, talent, or contribution to the County. Other figures of note to be appointed to the Order include Royal Lady Queen Camilla in 2022. She became part of a select company that includes former prime minister Tony Blair, who was awarded membership in 2023, and the composer Andrew Lloyd-Webber, honored as a Companion in 2024.

The day’s ceremony began in the historic Edinburgh Castle, with King Charles III and Queen Camilla making their way through the castle grounds to begin the procession. The Princess of Wales was spellbinding attendees in a mesmerizing white peplum-style ensemble from Self-Portrait. She completed her ensemble with a stylish saucer-style hat by Sean Barrett and pretty pearl jewelry. The Duchess of Edinburgh was a vision in a pale pink Suzannah London frock. She accessorized her look with a wide-brimmed hat, even matching Princess Kate.

This year’s event took place just two days after the royal family gathered to celebrate King Charles III’s official birthday during the Trooping the Colour ceremony. The Order of the Garter is one of Britain’s oldest and most exclusive orders of chivalry. It is a window into the oh-so-traditional traditions that continue to flourish around the monarchy.

Prince William, made the 1,000th such Royal Knight of the Garter by Queen Elizabeth in 2008, is likely to win his own prestigious title. While he was unable to attend this year’s ceremony, his connection to the honor remains incredibly deep. The versatile event proudly celebrates the contributions of the Sovereign’s Award winners. It is a tribute to everyone who has made outstanding contributions to life in Britain.
