Rodri, the 29-year-old Spain international and Ballon d’Or winner, is already facing a different test in his young professional life. He is still rehabilitating from a very serious groin tear. The injury occurred during Manchester City’s recent 4-3 defeat against Al Hilal in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup in July. Rodri could now have an uncomfortable few weeks on the sidelines with Manchester City starting the new Premier League season. This is partly because of the political environment surrounding his situation.
Rodri is the victim of this latest incident only months after returning from a lengthy injury layoff. He only made it back to competitive action in May after an eight-month lay-off due to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. The midfielder’s return to form thrilled Manchester City supporters. Unfortunately, a new groin injury has now cast doubt over his playing time yet again.
According to reports appearing in the British media, Rodri may well be on the faster track in his recovery. He’s been with Manchester City for the last two trainings and has made a vast improvement. Nevertheless, the club is still being careful as he works his way back to full fitness.
Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s head coach, expressed optimism regarding Rodri’s recovery.
“He has trained better in the last few days. Hopefully after the international break [in September], he will be really fit.” – Pep Guardiola
Guardiola spoke about the need to make sure Rodri isn’t pushed back too quickly, underscoring the idea that this process is delicate.
“Hopefully in these [first three Premier League] games, he can play some minutes, but what is important is that he doesn’t have pain because we don’t want Rodri coming back injured. We will try desperately to avoid that.” – Pep Guardiola
That should give them extra time to adjust in case Rodri misses the start of the new campaign. This hurdle only continues a fight with injuries that has already made things much tougher for him. His unavailability would be a significant blow as Manchester City chase a third consecutive title.
