The Jersey Futsal team has been making waves in the world of futsal for nearly two years. Under the veteran guidance of Gary Norman, who has been dedicated to the sport for over two decades, the team has honed their skills on the hard court. Futsal, known for its fast-paced nature and smaller pitch, features teams of five players each. This year, the team is ambitiously setting its sights on competing in England's Futsal tournaments, marking their return to off-island play.
Team members Bernardo Houiellebecq, Humair, and Lewis Nowell are at the forefront of this charge. Bernardo, who alternates between playing as a right-back and a goalkeeper, speaks highly of the impact futsal has had on his skills.
"It's improving my game every day, every week." – Bernardo Houiellebecq
He emphasizes the benefits of close control and fitness that come with the sport. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Humair, who has recently been awarded the Learning Disabilities Adults Player of the Year in 2024, has ambitions that extend beyond personal accolades. Playing either left or right wing, Humair hopes to inspire others with learning difficulties to engage with futsal.
"I just would like to represent my family and for them to watch me play on the biggest stage possible so we'll see what 2025 holds." – Humair
Humair is known for his aggressive style of play.
"I like to go forward and attack playing risky football." – Humair
Lewis Nowell, a regular goalkeeper for the team, relishes the challenges that futsal presents. The fast-paced game on a smaller court offers him constant opportunities to test his abilities.
"It's challenging, but I like to challenge myself." – Lewis Nowell
Lewis harbors dreams of representing Jersey at prestigious events like the Special Olympics and the Mencap Home International football tournament.
Manager Gary Norman shares that all players genuinely enjoy playing futsal. The camaraderie and competitive spirit they foster have been instrumental in their development both individually and as a team. The players' enthusiasm is palpable as they prepare for upcoming tournaments.
