In August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) introduced a new national framework aimed at standardizing how councils across England handle unauthorized absences. Fines have increased from £60 to £80 if settled within 21 days, or £160 if paid within 28 days. Repeated absences can lead to higher fines and potentially severe legal consequences. For instance, a second fine within three years for the same child automatically costs £160, and a third unauthorized absence could result in prosecution, with fines reaching up to £2,500 in court.
Last academic year saw a record 356,181 school holiday fines across England, highlighting the scale of the issue. Doncaster Council notably issued the most fines per 1,000 pupils in 2022-2023, numbering 149.
