With Easter Sunday right around the corner, many retailers are announcing their holiday hours. Most of them have chosen to close in observance of the holiday. TJX, the parent company of retail powerhouses such as TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra and Homesense, is going all in. On this day, it will be closing all of its stores. Public transportation advocates are hopeful this will be the year Macy’s closes its doors to the public for the holiday. They can continue to shop online and on the app.
Lowe’s stores will be closed on Easter Sunday, too. This decision is part of the company’s long-standing commitment to recognizing and rewarding their associates. A representative from Lowe’s stated, “This day off will give our associates the opportunity to spend some extra time with their loved ones.” The change is consistent with Lowe’s First values of respect and care for employees.
Store Closures
Beyond TJX and Lowe’s, a growing number of retailers have closed for Easter Sunday. Aldi grocery store chains and all Kohl’s department stores will not be open on this holiday. Trader Joe’s in Portland, Maine will close its doors on Easter, while other Trader Joe’s stores will remain open with normal operating hours.
Costco is another one of the big box retailers that will be closed on Easter Sunday. The possible silver lining is that the company closed its U.S. warehouses this Easter, one of seven holidays it observes this year for its U.S. workers. Like TJX, which recently shared that it focuses on taking care of its employees, Costco’s first priority is taking care of their employees. A TJX representative noted, “We consider ourselves an Associate-friendly company and we are pleased to give Associates the time to enjoy Easter with family and friends.”
Open Stores
Though a significant number of retailers are choosing to close their doors this Easter Sunday, others are staying open to serve customers. Walmart will be open as usual, giving their customers access whenever they need it, and inviting their customers to come experience the new service. All of the other Albertsons banner stores—including Safeway, Jewel-Osco, ACME, Vons and Tom Thumb—will be open on Easter Sunday.
CVS pharmacy will continue to leave its doors open on April 20, although some stores might adjust their hours. Albertsons is directing customers to call their local store for information on pharmacy hours on the holiday.
As consumers consider their shopping needs in relation to Easter Sunday, knowing the operating hours at their favorite stores can make for a smoother experience.
