Rabbi Barbara Aiello: Blazing a Trail as Italy’s First Female Rabbi

Rabbi Barbara Aiello, an American who has called Italy home for over 18 years, has carved a unique path as the country's first female rabbi. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Aiello's journey to Italy was fueled by a deep connection to her heritage and a desire to modernize Jewish traditions. Despite challenges with residency due to a broken "chain of ancestry," Aiello has embraced life in Serrastretta, Calabria, where she established the first progressive synagogue in 2004.

Aiello's father, originally from Italy, inspired her affinity for the country. Their visit in 1975 left an indelible mark, prompting Aiello to return years later to create a vibrant Jewish community. Ordained as a rabbi at 51 by the Reform movement, she brought a fresh perspective to Judaism, fostering acceptance and respect for diverse religions alongside local clergy.

In Calabria, Aiello found a cost-effective lifestyle compared to the United States. She remarked on the affordability of groceries, managing to fill two bags with fresh produce for just 40 euros. Despite the economic benefits, she continues to fight for bloodline citizenship to pass on to her daughter, symbolizing her deep-rooted connection to her father's homeland.

“If you’re buying a home, or you’re starting a business, or you’re trying to travel, and you want things to move quickly in an organized fashion, like you’re used to in the US. You’re going to be very unhappy here.” – Rabbi Barbara Aiello

Aiello emphasizes the need for patience and adaptability when transitioning to life in Italy. She encourages newcomers to immerse themselves in the language and culture, acknowledging that her own linguistic journey was initially challenging.

“Devote your time to the language.” – Rabbi Barbara Aiello

Her early days in Milan were marked by language barriers despite conversational proficiency. Giving sermons in Italian posed difficulties, but persistence paid off as she gradually improved over time.

“When I first came to Milan, I couldn’t give a sermon in Italian.” – Rabbi Barbara Aiello

“Even though I could carry on a conversation, to speak about something in depth was difficult for me. So the first year was a struggle. The second year was better.” – Rabbi Barbara Aiello

Adapting to Italy's slower pace of life also required adjustment. Aiello learned to appreciate this aspect of Italian culture, embracing the warmth and camaraderie of her new community.

“There’s just a warmth and a sense of camaraderie and a sense of acceptance.” – Rabbi Barbara Aiello

In Serrastretta, Aiello successfully established a strong Jewish community. Her synagogue attracts many locals, bridging cultural gaps and promoting interfaith understanding.

“I believe that interfaith marriages are the hope for Judaism.” – Rabbi Barbara Aiello

Despite the idyllic summer visits, Aiello acknowledges that living in Calabria presents its unique set of challenges. She highlights the stark contrast between summer and winter experiences.

“Coming to Calabria in July is really different from being in Calabria today, where the houses are cold and drafty.” – Rabbi Barbara Aiello

“Change is always difficult, even when it’s a positive change.” – Rabbi Barbara Aiello

Her journey has taught her that adapting to a new environment requires more than just visiting—it involves an enduring commitment to understanding and integrating into local life.

“There are real challenges. But you can’t just kind of parachute in and expect that it’s going to be like your last Italian vacation.” – Rabbi Barbara Aiello

Aiello's story is one of resilience and dedication. Her ability to create lasting change and foster community spirit is testament to her passion for her heritage and her adopted home.
