Queen Camilla hosted a prestigious event at Clarence House for the British Equestrian World Class Programme team and their supporters, marking a celebration of their achievements. As the patron of the British Equestrian Federation since 2006, the Queen expressed her pride in the team's accomplishments, emphasizing how their success made everyone proud to be British. The event gathered 93 guests, including athletes, coaches, physiotherapists, and supporters.
During the celebration, Queen Camilla shared a light-hearted moment with Ros Canter when presented with a drawing by Canter's 5-year-old daughter, Ziggy. The drawing depicted the Queen as a princess, which amused her greatly. In response, Queen Camilla promised to send Ziggy a letter, adding a personal touch to the already memorable occasion.
The Queen's involvement with the British Equestrian Federation extends beyond ceremonial duties. Her interest in the team's work and their achievements was evident throughout the event. She received a souvenir photobook from Adam Short, compiled by team photographer Jon Stroud. The photobook chronicled their journey during the Paris Games with vivid images capturing "all the gory snapshots, the tears, the thrills and the medals," reflecting an eventful year for the team.
“I'm so proud to be your patron and it made us all very proud to be British. I'm sorry I wasn't there, but I was watching very keenly every bit of it on the television and it really did bring tears to the eyes. So thank you, the whole team, for everything you do and let's keep the British the best.” – The Queen
Natasha Baker, a Paralympian, shared her experiences with Queen Camilla, discussing her journey through four Paralympics and where she stores her medals.
“We spoke about the fact that it was my fourth Paralympics and I've become a bit of a seasoned pro now, and we spoke about where we keep our medals.” – Natasha Baker
Jim Eyre echoed Baker's sentiments, highlighting the significant achievements of 2024 and acknowledging the competitive spirit they faced.
“2024 was an incredible year. It pains me to say how well the French did. It was a roller coaster year, and there were the highs and there were the lows, and that our teams were able to perform so extraordinarily well and every rider come back with a medal, it's testament to the talent that we have within this country.” – Jim Eyre
The event celebrated not only victories but also camaraderie and dedication within the equestrian community. Paralympians Natasha Baker, Sophie Wells, Georgia Wilson, and Mari Durward-Akhurst were among those who attended. Their presence underscored the diverse talents within the British Equestrian team.
Natasha Baker expressed her admiration for Queen Camilla's support and enthusiasm for equestrian sports.
“She's just so knowledgeable about horses and equestrian sporting in general, and she's so supportive of us. You know, hosting events like this, it's such a huge honour for us to be invited to come along and to be able to meet her… she's so passionate about it. She's watching us every step of the way through the Games, and she always knows what we've been up to, and always is so interested in what's coming next for us, which is great.” – Natasha Baker
Adam Short shared his gratitude for being part of such a distinguished gathering.
“The Queen was very interested to hear about it and the work they are doing. I have lived the story. Being here is an honour I would never even have imagined.” – Adam Short
