Production Begins on Spaceballs 2 with Rick Moranis Back in Action

Mel Brooks has cast worry to the wind and confirmed the production of Spaceballs 2, a sequel to the cherished 1987 cult classic. In a video message shared in June, Brooks revealed that the long-awaited film is now in progress, marking a significant return for several original cast members, including Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, George Wyner, and Mel Brooks himself.

Josh Greenbaum steps into the director’s chair for “Spaceballs 2.” He navigates this all on the strict script he co-wrote with frequent collaborators Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. The movie is Moranis’s first live-action acting role since 1997. He then went on a lengthy hiatus where he lent his voice to red animated characters.

Though the original cast members will reprise their roles, “Spaceballs 2” will introduce a new slate of characters on the other side of the galaxy. Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan will join the project, although details regarding their characters remain undisclosed.

While production has officially begun on the film, details on the plot are being heavily protected. A subsequent press release added with tongue-in-cheek, that such information are “under lock, key and a Schwartz shield of industrial strength.” The tight-lipped nature of the plot only deepens the waters of excitement that flow around the film.

In his announcement, Brooks looked back on the project’s beginnings. He stated, “After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ Instead, we’re making this movie.” This time done right, this sentiment perfectly encapsulates the comical and sci-fi absurdity fans have come to love and expect from the franchise.

“May the Schwartz be with you!” – Mel Brooks

With production now underway and that incredibly talented cast and crew in place, excitement is brewing for this sequel like we haven’t seen in a long time.
