The 21-year-old princess, who is a member of the Bourbon royal family of Spain, as well as Brazil and the two Sicilies, suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash. She visited the Grand Prix in Monaco where she was able to partake in the glamorous celebrations of such a prestigious event. Not long after that, the tragic incident happened.
The teenage princess also flew over the handlebars and impacted a wall face-first on her motorcycle, causing most of her disfigurement. Emergency responders promptly transported her to the hospital where further assessments revealed her traumatic injuries. There, she was placed in the Intensive Care Unit for further work-up and management.
In a statement released after the crash, an obviously thankful Princess Maria Carolina noted her fortune to survive. “I’m very fortunate just to be alive,” she told CNN, recalling the terrifying ordeal.
Maria Carolina is the second daughter of Prince Carlo, Duke of Castro, and Princess Camilla of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. She has a younger sister, Princess Maria Chiara, 20. The two siblings are very close, with Maria Carolina having always been vocal about cherishing family ties.
“I heard a quote once that said parents leave too early, your future partner maybe arrives too late, but the only person who stays with you forever is your sibling,” she remarked. “It’s great to have someone by your side who always has your back, who helps you and loves you, and with whom you can create memories.”
Princess Maria Carolina encouraged her subjects to always practice safety when riding. “Please ride with care. Wear full protection, especially a proper helmet. Mine saved my life,” she stated. Her words strike a chord knowing what she’s had to endure after a recent crash and underscore the importance of protective gear for motorcyclists.
From the outset, Princess Maria Carolina had established a marked precedent academically. She attended both Harvard University and the International University of Monte Carlo at the same time. She was trained at the Marangoni Fashion Institute in Paris.
