As part of his visit, he engaged with young students, joining them in a unique exercise where they evaluated football plays to determine appropriate penalties.
William's interaction with the students was both educational and entertaining. He viewed video clips alongside them, deciding whether the actions warranted a red card, a yellow card, or no card at all. In a humorous moment, when questioned about a red card decision, he jokingly deferred to two nearby girls for advice, showcasing his approachable demeanor and sense of humor.
The Prince also had the opportunity to speak with Levi Gray, a professional referee and British Army lieutenant. Their discussion centered around Gray's impressive career journey and the ongoing course at Sporting Khalsa FC. This course, initiated in July 2023, forms a crucial part of the Football Association’s Reflective and Representative campaign. The initiative aims to diversify refereeing by recruiting 1,000 individuals from black, Asian, and mixed heritage backgrounds.
During his visit, William tried his hand at refereeing a football match. He learned about the intricacies involved, including identifying fouls, understanding whistle tones, and mastering flag signaling. The Prince was visibly impressed by a pupil-made poster featuring his favorite team, Aston Villa, even giving it a thumbs up. Another poster humorously wished him luck with the words: "Hello Prince William, I hope you are a good ref, good luck."
Prince William’s connection with the local community was evident as he posed for selfies, exchanged hugs and high-fives, and chatted with pupils from Fibbersley Park Academy. His arrival, slightly delayed by 30 minutes, was nonetheless greeted enthusiastically by over 100 cheering schoolchildren.
