In just a few short weeks, Prince William heads to Brazil. He’s going there for the much-anticipated Earthshot Prize Awards, a star-studded ceremony honoring global environmental innovators that Prince William himself established. The Earthshot Prize started in 2020. Its mission is to identify and amplify creative solutions that are driving progress toward restoring the world. The gala awards ceremony will take place on November 5 in Rio de Janeiro. It’s specifically timed to overlap with the global climate change summit COP30 which will be held in Belem, deep in the Amazon.
He is also scheduled to speak at the awards. Particularly, he’s participating in the summit on behalf of his dad, King Charles. The event promises to be a celebration of sustainability and hope, featuring performances from a star-studded lineup including Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes.
The Earthshot Prize Awards have, in the past, been held in London, Boston, Singapore, and Cape Town. Like prior years’ editions, this year’s edition serves as a showcase for the people and organizations taking big steps towards environmental restoration. All five of these winning finalists will be awarded £1 million each to work up their game-changing ideas into the next stage.
“Brazil – I’m coming back! It’s a privilege and honour to be part of The Earthshot Prize in Rio – on stage with the people and the ideas that could save our planet.”
Joining Minogue and Mendes will be legend Brazilian artist Seu Jorge, which adds even more pedigree to the lineup. Jorge highlighted the power of grassroots movements in protecting the environment, saying,
The opening awards ceremony will be hosted by popular Brazilian broadcaster Luciano Huck, a possible candidate himself for President in 2022. Other high-profile speakers include Cafu, the iconic former Brazilian football defender. Joining world leaders on the list is Sebastian Vettel, the four-time Formula One world champion, and Txai Surui, a firebrand activist for Brazil’s Indigenous communities and climate activism.
“The real heroes today are the people out there doing the work, restoring forests, cleaning rivers, and caring for the places we call home. Their work reminds us that healing the Earth begins with small acts of courage, and I am proud to be part of the Earthshot Prize, celebrating that spirit and the people who refuse to give up on our planet.”
Prince William and Princess Kate are apparently about to enjoy a rare respite from their royal duties. They’re making the most of their children’s October half-term holiday as they settle into their new home, Forest Lodge.
We’re really looking forward to the 2023 Earthshot Prize Awards in Rio! There is no doubt that Prince William’s commitment to environmental advocacy is increasing.
