It’s Prince Joachim of Denmark, who is reportedly considering moving back to his native land after six years abroad. With Prince Joachim and family now living in Washington D.C., Prince Joachim now has a more stable base. He came to the United States in 2023 to assume duties as defense attaché at the Danish Embassy. His appointment is for a term of three years, with the possibility of renewal. He has plans of returning to his home country and not making the US his permanent residence.
Prince Joachim still resides in Washington D.C. He lives with his wife, Princess Marie, and their two children—Count Henrik, 16, and Countess Athena. The family had come from Paris, where they had lived for a long time before his present assignment. For Prince Joachim, in recent months he has witnessed how his children’s social circle is always growing. They are busy excelling in their new space. He has expressed feelings of homesickness.
We can all see it, but most of all in the kids. He continued, affecting the tone of that remark with passion and sincerity, That is the only thing I am sorry about…We have our biggest social base in Denmark. Since we aren’t able to do roundtrip travel, there is indeed a six-hour time difference and an ocean between us, inclusief Galapagos, Ecuador. When we are home we really savor our time there and appreciate it more than we thought possible. Maybe that’s the salve for being so far from home.
The prince, too, wishes to return to Denmark. Still, he plans to keep an open mind toward staying overseas based on how the future develops. “We have a desire to come home. However, we are not against living abroad either. Now we have to see. For the moment, it’s very much on our radar. When that tour here ends, we’ll come home with it,” he told us.
Though Prince Joachim turns 56 on Saturday, and thus the eligible age for retirement, he still has numerous existing Danish patronages that have been entrusted to him. His brother, King Frederik and sister-in-law, Queen Mary perform important duties within the Danish royal family. Prince Joachim’s children will not assume full-time royal responsibility as adults. This is thanks in no small part to their mother, Princess Marie, and the family’s commitment to royal engagement.
Additionally, Prince Joachim has two older sons, Count Nikolai, 25, and Count Felix, 22, from his first marriage. Queen Margrethe is set to abdicate in January 2024, making her focus on a shorter timetable. This promised change could move the dynamics inside the British royal family even further in that direction.
