Prince Frederik’s Legacy: A Battle Against POLG Mitochondrial Disease

Prince Frederik of Luxembourg, in his early 20s, passed away on March 1 in Paris after a lifelong battle with POLG mitochondrial disease. This rare genetic disorder ultimately claimed his life just one day after Rare Disease Day, underscoring the urgent need for increased awareness and research into such conditions. His family announced his untimely passing on the website of the POLG Foundation, which Frederik himself founded in 2022 with the mission of advancing research and finding a cure for the disease.

The POLG Foundation describes POLG as a "genetic mitochondrial disorder that robs the body’s cells of energy, in turn causing progressive multiple organ dysfunction and failure." Prince Frederik dedicated his life to combating this disorder, both through his personal perseverance and through his work with the foundation. His commitment reflected not only in his founding of the organization but also in his role as its Creative Director.

His father, Prince Robert of Luxembourg, expressed the family's deep sorrow and pride in his son's efforts.

"It is with a very heavy heart that my wife and I would like to inform you of the passing of our son, The POLG Foundation Founder and Creative Director, Frederik," – Prince Robert of Luxembourg

Prince Robert further highlighted the foundation's ongoing mission.

"Frederik and the POLG Foundation … are committed to finding therapies and a cure to save other patients from suffering what Frederik and our family have endured," – Prince Robert of Luxembourg

Frederik's journey with POLG mitochondrial disease was marked by resilience and courage. Diagnosed with the disorder early in life, he continuously battled its debilitating effects while using his position to raise awareness and funds for research. The foundation he established serves as a testament to his dedication to helping others who suffer from the same condition.

The POLG Foundation, based online, continues to advocate for those affected by this rare disease. It seeks to foster scientific advancements that could alleviate the suffering of patients worldwide. Despite his passing, Frederik's vision endures through the foundation's ongoing efforts.
