Premier League Season Wrap-Up Features Surprises and Controversies

The 2024-25 Premier League season just concluded with plenty of drama. Newcastle United were able to avoid hitting their all-time low top-flight rung by beating Manchester United 2-0 on the final day, keeping Villa from a prized Champions League position. Liverpool’s title party was documented in jubilant detail. At the same time, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne was playing his last matches for the club, conjuring up nostalgia-inducing moments for supporters.

Newcastle United’s eventual 18th place finish would culminate in what became an embarrassing chapter for the club, a culmination of misfortune all season long. They were disappointing this campaign, but they qualified for the Champions League nevertheless. This was due to the results of other matches. It was the nature of their situation that really brought home just how wild this year’s league has been.

Manchester United’s season finished on a very positive note defeating Aston Villa 4-0 at Old Trafford recently. The home side danced their way to victory with beautiful goals. This victory ended Villa’s hopes of qualifying for next year’s Champions League. This was a huge shot of morale for a squad that has been largely disparaged all season.

Manchester City would end the season in third place in the table, 71 points from 38 matches. Their match against Fulham showcased remarkable performances, particularly from Ilkay Gundogan, who scored an impressive overhead kick. On fire forward Erling Haaland made noise beyond scoring the dagger, too, as he slotted home a penalty to score his 22nd league goal of the season.

“The TV is clear with the move but of course we have to accept it,” – Unai Emery

Aston Villa’s manager Unai Emery made his disgust clear immediately following the game. He called out the officiating crew for what he deemed a “huge mistake.” His remarks underscored the high stakes, high drama of the winner-take-all last matchday. Villa were equally ambitious, evidently desperate to return to the Champions League.

Liverpool’s season ended with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace today at Anfield. Even with the tie, Liverpool partied as their win as Premier League champions was officially confirmed, punctuating their total authority this season. The team’s ability to bounce back, and more importantly their consistency on both sides of the ball earned them a well-deserved title.

Although the competitive season had already ended, a capacity crowd gathered at Manchester City’s last game to pay tribute to the departing star Kevin De Bruyne. Immediately following this match the creative midfielder stayed connected with fans. Those were echoed by many fans behind the goal who held up signs, thanking him for his contributions to the club.

Brighton and Hove Albion crushed Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 in a dominant display. This win married perfectly to the dramatic finish of the league as teams scrambled for postseason positions.
