Recent Oscar Piastri Wins Spanish Grand Prix from Pole Position He doggedly defended his lead the entire race. The McLaren driver dominated the weekend with poise, navigating a magnificent start without any contact while taking the win ahead of teammate Lando Norris. From the moment the lights went out, Piastri controlled the race, overtaking smartly and defensively. On the other hand, Max Verstappen made a barnstorming start, forking second place from Norris into turn 1 on the opening lap. The Bottas incident promoted Charles Leclerc to fourth, and when he dispatched George Russell soon after, the Ferrari driver was up to fifth early on.
Notable Incidents and Penalties
Lap 55 introduced an unexpected turn to the race when Kimi Antonelli crashed, allowing for a new face to take the lead. This was the crash that brought out the safety car. After the safety car restart, Verstappen crashed into Russell twice, causing huge ramifications for the Red Bull driver. While the first occurrence was a warning, the second led to a 10-second time penalty awarded to Verstappen.
With a loss of pace after the key incidents, Verstappen was unable to recover and found himself in 10th place after the post-race penalty. This discouraging outcome is a far cry from the jubilation with which Piastri emerged victorious.
“I tried to push him to the left. There was a bit of contact but fortunately no consequences.” – Charles Leclerc
Podium Finishers
Once the race settled, Piastri and Norris proved their control as the top two continued to separate themselves from the rest of the field. Leclerc even placed third on the podium, capping an incredible weekend for Ferrari. Russell eventually had to settle for fourth and the near-miss of a podium, but the other Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg came home fifth. Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top six.
Piastri could hardly contain his happiness with the race result, especially considering his performance coming off a difficult last round in Monaco.
“It’s a nice way to bounce back from Monaco. A superb weekend.” – Oscar Piastri
