It’s shaping up to be one of the most exciting races ever as these incredibly talented drivers do battle for the elusive win.
Russell's Struggle and Triumph
This was a particularly difficult session for Mercedes driver George Russell, who could not find the right tire performance. Through all of this adversity though, he was able to overcome it on his last trip around the track.
“I did something totally different on that last lap and it all came alive, the lap was awesome,” Russell commented on his impressive recovery.
Delivering a McLaren Chief Executive Officer Zak Brown the Russell session and commended the work, recognizing how competitive we know was the Koski .
“It’s awesome to have Oscar get his first pole. He’s been close, a lot of front rows, and that was a mega lap,” stated Brown.
Tough Day for Lawson
Liam Lawson had a difficult day on the lap, running into issues preventing him from maximizing his true potential. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner sympathized with Lawson, who was dealt a tough hand.
“We’ll have a good look at it and go through it and try to give him the best car for tomorrow,” Horner remarked.
In his own words, Lawson himself further acknowledged the obstacles he faced this session.
“It was a messy session and had we not dealt with traffic and stuff like that it might have been OK, but to be honest it’s still not good enough. I just need to get on top of it. I think it’s just time. Unfortunately, I don’t really have time,” Lawson expressed.
Penalties and Positions
Fellow Aussie Jack Doohan went through the wars in what was an eventful session. Since then, he’s picked up two penalty points for a collision during the sprint. This clash meant Doohan was out at the first hurdle and will see him starting from 18th on the grid. His only still-active formula friend and former Alpine teammate, Pierre Gasly, will start from 16th place.
Ferrari ensured a spot on the third row with Lewis Hamilton in fifth. Lando Norris will begin third on the grid after making major changes to his car after the sprint in order to improve the performance on his machine.
“We changed quite a lot on the car (after the sprint) because we were nowhere,” shared Norris about his adjustments.
