OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced the forthcoming release of their latest large language model, GPT-5. The highly-anticipated model will be accessible through OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform, marking a significant development in the realm of artificial intelligence. To utilize this new model, users must have an account for the chatbot. In a move that is likely to excite many, OpenAI plans to offer unlimited chat access to the GPT-5 model to free tier users.
The GPT-5 model introduces the o3 reasoning model, which OpenAI has chosen not to ship as a standalone product. Unlike its predecessor, the o1 reasoning model that required a costly subscription of $200 per month through ChatGPT Pro, the o3 will be integrated exclusively with GPT-5. This strategic shift means that while the o1 model was available as a separate offering, the o3 will be part of a more unified experience within GPT-5, enhancing accessibility for users.
In addition to GPT-5, OpenAI will release the GPT-4.5, internally known as "Orion," as the final model in their "chain-of-thought" series. This comes nearly two years after the debut of GPT-4, showcasing OpenAI's continued commitment to advancing their language models. Notably, the company bypassed labeling any intermediate version as "o2," opting to leap directly from o1 to o3.
Despite this breakthrough in AI technology, OpenAI emphasizes responsible use. Free tier users will enjoy unlimited access to GPT-5 on a standard intelligence setting; however, their usage will be subject to review based on abuse thresholds. This approach ensures a balanced deployment of advanced AI capabilities while maintaining ethical standards.
